Minister of State for Disability, Emer Higgins TD Visits Camphill Callan!

A Special Visit to Camphill Callan! 

Camphill Communities of Ireland, Callan, in County Kilkenny, were delighted to welcome Emer Higgins T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, for a very special visit to their residential home. She was warmly greeted by all residents and given a tour of the service. 

On such an important day, it was only fitting that the residents themselves had the opportunity to greet and receive the Minister, lead the tour, and share their stories. After all, it is their lives, their services, and their achievements that were at the centre of the visit. 

The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for residents to meet the Minister directly, share insights into their lives, and talk about the activities and supports that help them live fulfilling lives. The Minister engaged warmly with our Community Members. 

Brianna, a resident in Camphill Callan, shared her passion for art and her incredible journey from completing her FETAC Level 5 Art and Design Portfolio at Ormond College to beginning her studies at NCAD, National College of Art and Design. Her work, amongst others, is featured in a beautiful book produced by KCAT Arts Centre, Camphill’s multidisciplinary arts studio in Kilkenny, which celebrates inclusive artistic practices. 

Another resident Jan, spoke eloquently about the importance of further funding for residential services, highlighting the need for more resources for people with complex needs and intellectual disabilities. She also shared his pottery creations with the Minister. 

Camphill Callan resident Fintan showcased his artwork in the KCAT collection and spoke about his creative journey, while Shane and other residents also had the opportunity to engage with the Minister during the visit. 

The Minister’s visit was supported by Camphill Callan staff, also CCOI Area Service Manager Lorraine Ballagh, CCOI’s Head of Finance Robert Twiss, Catherine Callaghan TD, members of the HSE Ireland as well as Fine Gael’s Joe Lyons and Paul Doogue. 

It was inspiring to see our residents confidently share their achievements, showcase their talents, and advocate for the supports they need and deserve. Camphill Communities of Ireland continues to empower individuals to live enriched, supported lives with autonomy, independence, and purpose. We are so proud of all our residents for hosting such a meaningful visit!
